Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2016) - Despite being outshot 25-5, the Molloy College women's soccer team was able to launch an impressive defensive effort to draw 1-1 with Mercy College on Saturday (Oct. 22).
The Mavericks would strike first as Dominique Banks (San Diego, Calif.) sent the first shot of the game above the net one minute and 12 seconds into the contest. Mercy would continue to keep the ball in the offensive zone, but were unable to get a shot on target. Sophomore goalkeeper
Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.) woud be up to the challenge, making saves on the first two shots on goal she faced. However, in the 36th minute, a shot from freshman Jessica Brandt (Folsom, Calif.) from 20 yards out would find its way to the back of the net to give Mercy the 1-0 lead.
Molloy continued to apply pressure and foce Mercy's shots off target. It appeared that Mercy would head into the half up a goal, but the Lions refused to quit. Junior
Samantha Mendes (Mineola, N.Y.) was able to steal the ball away from a Mercy defender and send a pass to a waiting
Danielle Valente (South Setauket, N.Y.) at the top of the box. The senior launched a shot past keeper Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz.) to tie the game 1-1 with five seconds remaining in the first half.
Mercy controlled the pace for the majority of the contest, totaling 25 shots on the evening, with Banks and Alyssa Iannuzzi (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) leading the Mavericks with four each. Wilson would make 11 saves in the effort, bringing her save percentage to .725 on the season. The Lions were led by Valente, who had two of the five shots for Molloy in the contest.
The Lions return to action on Friday (Oct. 28) as they take on American International College in Springfield, Mass. at 2:00 p.m.
