ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2012) - No. 11 Dowling College was too much for the Molloy College women’s lacrosse team on Thursday night, as the Golden Lions topped the Lions, 19-8, at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
The Lions (8-8, 5-2 ECC) opened the scoring, earning a 2-0 lead off goals from juniors Kaitlynn Kelly (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Codi Reiser (Farmingdale, N.Y.). Dowling responded though with seven straight to take a 7-2 lead. Freshman Jackie Anderson (Shirley, N.Y.) accounted for three straight during the spurt.
Molloy answered with another pair of its own with just under 10 minutes left in the half. Senior Emily Antonette (Seaford, N.Y.) and Kelly scored, bringing the count to 7-4. But, the Golden Lions (11-4, 5-0 ECC) closed out the period with two more tallies, and captured a 9-4 edge heading into halftime.
The visitors came back from the break in the same fashion, as they scored four straight to take a 13-4 lead. Anderson and sophomore Samantha Stavish (Mineola, N.Y.) netted a pair apiece.
Senior Nicole DeAngelis (Floral Park, N.Y.) broke up the Dowling run with an unassisted tally at the 19:18 mark. However, the visitor’s Kelly Difede (Ridge, N.Y.) turned in a pair of goals, bringing the score to 15-5 with 15:46 still to be played.
Kelly added her third of the day and team-leading 47th of the year at the 12:58 mark, moving the score to 15-6. The Lions added two of the final five goals of the contest, as junior Nicole Mastrianni (Seaford, N.Y.) scored twice. Dowling’s JeriLynn Goodfellow (Hauppauge) netted her side’s final two goals of the game for a 19-8 victory.
Head Coach Tom Campolettano and the Lions are back in action next Saturday (May. 5), as they host ECC rival St. Thomas Aquinas in its 2012 regular-season finale at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The opening draw is slated for noon. Molloy will also honor its graduating seniors, Antonette, DeAngelis, and Alison Scalice (Farmingdale, N.Y.), in a pre-game ceremony.
