Field Hockey Edged at Southern Connecticut State

New Haven, Conn.- The field hockey team fell to the Southern Connecticut State Owls this evening in a close 1-0 contest. The Lions sit at 1-7 on the season and 0-4 in Northeast-10 Conference play, and the Owls improve to 3-6, 1-3 in NE10 play.

How it Happened
  • The Owls secured its lead in the first quarter when Mia Oliverio scored through traffic from the right side off a pass from Lindsey Onofrio.
  • In the second quarter, freshman goalie Kayla Balsamo made three key saves, and junior Dayanna Ortiz-More recorded her first career defensive save, preventing the home team from extending its lead.
  • The Lions pressed hard in the third quarter, taking four shots in an effort to equalize the score.
  • Balsamo made another three saves during the fourth quarter to hold Southern Connecticut to just one goal.
Top Performances
  • Sophomore Farah Amarando led the offense with two shots.
  • Juniors Gianna Mastrocco and Nikki Longitano, along with freshman Mia Babino all recorded one shot on goal.
  • Balsamo made a total of nine saves in net.
